The 500 Mile Odyssey
Singapore to Kalimantan Outrigger Canoe Charity Expedition

Posted on June 7, 2011 by dsturesson

4 June 2011 marked the start of the Singapore Paddle Club's charity expedition paddle to Kalimantan. The first of its kind in the world, the 500 mile odyssey will create history as the team traverses the open seas with their modern outrigger canoe!  After six months of intense training six days per week, modeled upon what "ultra" runners or iron men would undertake to build strength and endurance, the final crew members were hand-picked by expedition leader - Rod McCurdy, co‐leader - Nicholas Yap and former 2 times Kayak World Champion - Denes Szaszak.

The team of paddlers comprise: Chantal Hackford, Manfred Albrecht, Chris Box, Alexander Patterson, Petra Schuler, Martha Levin, Frederic Cabay, Andreas Rocznik, Jeremy Taylor and Anne Bendt.  The entire expedition team, all of whom are business professionals and Fortune 500 executives having balanced their work life and dedicated their time to this grueling challenge are now at their "peak" both physically and mentally. What drives them further is their goal of raising funds in excess of SGD$25000 in support of partner charities - Breast Cancer Foundation's Paddlers in the Pink and CARE Singapore. To date, SPC has achieved SGD$35000, but continues to appeal to the general public and corporate companies for donations. It is with the generous support from Title Sponsors Pacific Beverages Pte Ltd and San Miguel that this initial ocean crossing dream has become a reality!
